Student Opinions

Students view social studies as useful for understanding history, society, and current events. Several said that learning how Canada was formed and seeing how past events connect to issues today helps them understand where they come from and how societies function. Class discussions were said to be engaging because of how different opinions allow students to see multiple perspectives, become more aware of different cultures, and think about fairness. Students also mentioned that social studies supports other subjects such as English, science, and geography through reading, writing, and applying concepts about resources and global systems. However, there were also critical views. Some felt the course should include more hands on activities, projects, or field trips, and more focus on modern and real world topics rather than only historical content. Challenges such as memorizing dates and names, writing extended answers, and applying learning to real life were some of the negative comments, and one student questioned its overall usefulness.
